emailing to inquire about status of job application?

I submitted a job application (cover letter/resume) and when I called the firm in which I applied in they said that they will call me. It has been 8 days and they have not call me yet. Is it proper to email them to inquire about the status of my application?

While you are certainly free to contact them, the reality is that too many companies today behave like body shops. They utilize software to do keyword searches and absent the appropriate number of hits you will not receive serious consideration. To compound the problem, many companies are so thinly staffed that they have difficulty finding time for managers to interview prospective candidates.

It can be very frustrating from a candidate perspective, but the truth is that you have to kiss a lot a frogs. Don’t slow down your search waiting for a response that may not come or be extremely slow. Act like every submission is your first and keep reminding yourself that the right job is out there.

There’s nothing wrong with e-mailing or calling to find out your status, but I wouldn’t sit by the phone and wait for them to call. Stay active in your job search.

It is usually good to follow up on the status of your application. However, you don’t want to alienate your potential employer.

I would recommend sending an e-mail at this time, assuming that you submitted your resume through e-mail. If you mailed it, call to inquire if they received it. Then ASK when they plan on reviewing them.

And as the poster above stated — don’t stop looking for other jobs at this time.
