Which scanner should I buy to email forms as well as to go paperless with only 20 pages a week?

This is all new to me; although I’ve received emails with scanned documents for years, I’ve never bought or used a scanner. And now that I want to begin scanning and emailing documents instead of faxing, I want to get a machine that will also let me go paperless and not have to retain paperwork such as invoices, orders, bank statements, etc. Is Word the only software I need to accomplish this?
